Founded in 2011, the Department of Media Studies is the youngest academic centre of Metropolitan University Prague. It focuses on the curricula of both the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree study programmes while emphasising research activities in the field of media studies and media communication. Media studies is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field that incorporates a wide variety of conceptual and methodological approaches, including dominant perspective of sociology and anthropology.

With regard to the interdisciplinary nature of the field and the tradition of Czech media studies, the Department of Media Studies at MUP focuses on teaching the subject with an emphasis on the cultural dimension of media communication and on applied Media studies, particularly the development of media literacy and media education. From the very beginning, the department has dealt with the broad range of both mass- and network- mediated communication and its cultural dimension – particulalry from diachronic and historical perspectives. Among the choice of subjects offered to students on the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programmes, the course on media development (history of the mass media) is of crucial importance in today’s age, as too are the courses on the social theory of media, media and culture, and media semiotics.
