This monograph focuses on the legal protection of devices which includes graphic user interfaces. The aim of this monograph, which is entitled "Legal protection of the graphical user interfaces", is to explore the methods of legal protection available for graphical user interfaces (GUIs), namely copyright protection, industrial designs, utility models, patents and unfair competition in the context of the EU law. The main subject of investigation is to define which means of protection is suitable for which characteristics of a GUI. A further aim of the monograph is to give recommendations to users as to which type of protection is suitable to use in specific situations. The final aim of this monograph is to find weaknesses within the legal systems, specifically to determine where legal standards do not reflect development in the technical field.
Qualitative research is used as a methodology for this work. Here is used an inductive approach, the output of which is generalization. First, theoretical materials are gathered, practical examples are collected and then analyzed. The result is a general conclusion defined on the basis of partial knowledge.
